"35th Ryder Cup"
They left as underdogs and returned as record-breaking heroes. Europe's Ryder Cup team led by Langer, marshalled by Montgomerie and galvbanized by Garcia were golding heroes outclassing the might of America 18 1/2 to 9 1/2.
The USA boasted Tiger, Michelson and Davis Love. Captain Hal Sutton declared his team to be the best putting side in the competitions proud history. However, from the moment that Monty rolled in an eight-foot putt on the first green of Friday's fourballs. Europe took charge. Sutton's dream team of Mickelson and Woods were beaten twice on that incredible opening day as Europe romped into a five-point lead.
Back came the US, on the second morning, stung by the ferocity of the European assault. A wounded Tiger clawed his side back into the match, but then came the turning point, beating Furyk and Campbell by a single hole having been one down with just two to play.
The Europeans were inspired. Langer's united team went into the final day singles requiring just three points to retain The Ryder Cup. A desperte Sutton threw his top men out first and early on the scoreboards were awash with red.
The European response was emphatic. Garcia, Clarke and Westwood took Europe to the brink and who else but Captain's pick Monty was there to make the final, decisive putt.
By the end of an unforgettable day the scoreboard was a sea of blue and Oakland Hills echoed to the sound of European cheer.

"The 2006 Ryder Cup"
It has been called the greatest Ryder Cup in history and surely none of the tens of thousands present at the K Club, or the millions of people watching the event live on TV would disagree!

From the courageous Darren Clarke, who was carried along on a wave of home support, to the sensational Sergio Garcia and Colin Montgomerie, once more the heartbeat of the European team, Captain Ian Woosnam had a dozen dynamic heroes. Just as at Oakland Hills, two years earlier, the American side were again overwhelmed by the record score of 18 1/2 points to 9 1/2.
As Tiger toiled on day one it was Garcia who inspired the home side and on day two Paul Casey was the ace in the European pack with a hole in one as Woosnam's elite surged 10-6 ahead.
Woods returned to form in the final day singles but it was all too late for the USA as Monty led from the front and the scoreboard was soaked in European blue. "This one is for Heather!" declared home skip Woosie.
