STORY:
Kanichiro Yoshimura is poverty stricken samurai who can barely feed his family off the wages he earns. Hoping for a better life for his family, Kanichiro packs up to join the Shinsengumi - the most powerful samurai clan in Japan. Kanichiros skills as a swordsman is put to the test immediately by the instructor - Saito. Saito sees Kanichiro as a money-hungry samurai who joins the army only for fame, but soon changes his perspective as he sees how loyal and honorable Kanichiro is. Their friendship soon blossoms, but friendship and loyalty only comes so far when every man tries to survive in one of Japans most turbulent eras . . .
Review
When the Last Sword is Drawn or Mibu Gishi Den is an excellent character-driven samurai drama. Reminiscent of old Akira Kurosawa flicks depicting the end of the samurai, When the Last Sword is Drawn is Onmyouji-director Yojiro Takitas latest works. The film is based on Jiro Asadas bestselling novel of the same title and features an excellent script.
If you missed this excellent film due to the $60 Japanese SE version, heres your chance to get this limited edition version from Korea. Were not sure why, but they used the picture cover of The Twilight Samurai for the outer slip case. This limited edition comes with a digipack filmcut plus a very cool stainless steel letter opener (comes in the black foldout on the side so dont throw it away!). Extras arent as packed as the Japanese version, but the anamorphic print and DTS track (something the Japanese version did not have) are both very clean.
