The RAC Rally is always packed with drama, and in 1984 fans were treated to a real thriller. After five days of high-speed competition, the final round of the World Rally Championship would see the top two drivers separated by just four seconds! Experience the history-making action from the special stages of the 1984 Lombard RAC Rally in this exceptional highlights programme.
Ari Vatanen and his awesome Peugeot 205 T16 seemed unstoppable as the RAC Rally crossed England, Scotland and Wales and, with his biggest threat - Hannu Mikkola - struggling to recover time lost on the opening stages, victory seemed beyond doubt.
However, the RAC is never predictable, and with the end in sight Vatanen fell victim to the treacherous Welsh forests and rolled the mid-engined, four-wheel-drive Group B Peugeot. His lead was slashed, putting the Audi Quattro A2 of the hardcharging Mikkola within reach of victory and setting up a dramatic finale to a thrilling event.
Plus, there's the intense battle between Audi drivers Michele Mouton and John Buffum, Russell Brookes and Jimmy McRae's all-British grudge match in aging Opel Mantas, and plenty of on-board footage courtesy of the great Roger Clark. Experience forests, night stages and even a spin with extensive in-car sequences accompanied by the soundtrack of the Rothmans Porsche engine, co-driver's pace notes and more than a few rough landings!
