Arnold Schwarzenegger is The Terminator, a cyborg sent through time to 1984 by the machines, to kill Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton) before she fulfils her destiny and gives birth to the human resistances future leader John Conner. The Terminator is sent from 2029, where the machines ruled by Skynet are determined to eliminate the human race. They tried and succeeded in wiping out the majority of the human population when Skynet launched a nuclear strike on Russia in 1997 (causing the Russians to launch on everyone else) and only a small number of survivors fight on. One of them is Reese (Michael Biehn) who is sent back to 1984 to protect Sarah from the machine. But Reese will never be able to go back home to his own time. They must fight it out over two days of intense action to determine the future’s fate. Terminator is an absolute classic Sci-Fi movie and one which launched many of its stars onto successful careers, none more so than director James Cameron. The film was shot on a very tight budget indeed, yet looking at the effects work and action sequences you can see the genius of Cameron’s vision and hard work. The edition we review here is the Japanese Ultimate Edition, very similar to the special editions released in the UK and USA apart from one major home cinema difference, this edition has DTS sound.
