'Beat' Takeshi – Japan's most popular and charismatic star – plays the lead role in this very original take of the last days of a tough Tokyo gangster. Takeshi is Murakawa, an established and ruthless Yakuza, sent outside his usual turf to intervene in a gang war on the tropical island of Okinawa.
Things go badly wrong and he and his gang get caught in the crossfire. Forced to retreat to a seaside hideaway, they kill time and fool around on the beach, but then their enemies start picking them off one by one. Murakawa decides to go on the offensive for a final and breathtaking showdown.
Contrasting deeply lyrical scenes with shocking bursts of violence, laughter with gunfire, Sonatine shows why Takeshi is one of the most exciting film-makers to surface since the 1990s.

Sonatine ist ein sehr ruhiger Film, der ein gemächliches Tempo anschlägt und gerade dadurch überzeugt. Die kindischen Spielereien am Strand lullen den Zuschauer fast ein und erinnern in ihrer besonderen Schönheit an ähnliche Szenen aus Kitanos schönstem Film „Kikujiros Sommer“. Es ist wunderbar wie den Gangster die vielleicht glücklichsten Tage seines Lebens erfreuen, er sich an kindlichen Spielen erfreut, wie zum Beispiel Sandgruben auszuheben, in die seine Freunde dann fallen. Fast jäh wird dieser Teil des Films durch den Tod von Katagiri beendet, das brutale und tragische Finale eröffnet. Absolut sehenswert!
