It may be hard to imagine in these days of the erotic and adult film superstar, but there was a time when erotica was treated as the closeted bastard stepson of the entertainment industry. It wasn't something that was talked about in mixed company and was generally found on Super 8 and 16mm film in basement stag parties or in magazines pressed under the mattresses of only the lowest classes of shut-ins and perverts. In the late 60s and into the early 70s, though, things were beginning to change. It was slowly, but surely, becoming chic to indulge in nudity and sex. You were "in" if you could rattle off the names of a few dozen soft-core films you recently saw and you were absolutely "with it" if you could name the stars of the films. If you were to ask any true aficionados of these films who their favorite female soft-core movie star was at that time, they certainly wouldn't say Linda Lovelace or Marilyn Chambers. No, no, those were stars for the mainstream hipsters who would line up around the block at adult theaters just to be seen by passersby. Ask any dyed-in-the-wool fan and they would invariably say . . .The One, The Only, Uschi Digard.
