The Tragic Fantasy - The Tiger Of Wanchai
Sensationalized account of real life triad, the “Tiger of Wanchai," played here by Simon Yam. This gritty, overly violent piece entertains, but not effectively. It’s hard to like or identify with anyone in this film, even nice guy Lau Ching-Wan. Simon Yam is an effective actor and the meandering story has its moments. Sadly, the whole thing is set to syrupy pop songs that are among the worst I’ve heard in HK Cinema.
The film does earns points for referencing the famous Anita Mui incident where she was slapped by a gangster in a karaoke, whereupon the Tiger appeared to defend her honor. Somehow, all this is supposed to link up with the real-life Tiger’s tragic death, when he was shot to death by three killers wearing motorcycle helmets. That’s portrayed accurately, but the Tiger didn’t win the Macau Grand Prix. He came in second and was disqualified. Oh, well. This is a movie, after all.
